CARLOS DOÑAN
Artistic Director, Choreographer and Founder of FOLKTAP, was born in El Salvador, Central America, and started his dance training at Mauricio Bonilla’s Ballet in his country, expanding his studies at the National Ballet of Cuba, in Havana, Toni Escartin Dance Group, in Madrid, and TAPEPLAS, in Barcelona. He has performed as a guest Artist in Cuba, Spain and the US. In 2007 after touring throughout Spain as a Dancer and Choreographer, he moved to New York metropolitan area and began working on the creation of a new way of expression combining his Latin American, North American, European and Caribbean influences with his personal experiences. The result was FOLKTAP a contemporary tap dance company that unifies rhythm and movement in a visual and authentic language that brings to the stage thoughts and feelings through intimate and polyrhythmic melodies. Carlos Doñán has recently produced, directed and choreographed the FOLKTAP Danza company’s first production, “Encounter” – a return to silence and rebirth by exploring new sounds, colors and textures through music and dance. He was awarded “Young Talent of The Year” by the Art Gallery 91 and the National Council for Culture and Arts CONCULTURA (El Salvador 2001), “Dancer of The Year” by Ethics Committee (New Jersey 2007), and was designated “Distinguished Salvadorean of the Year” by Union City (New Jersey 2007).
